It was confirmed today, that CCTV footage shows that a 41-year-old Taiwanese woman who died after falling overboard from the cruise ship ‘Sun Princess’, intentionally went overboard, by climbing over the railing.
A spokesperson from Princess Cruises, confirmed to MaritimeSafetyandSecurity, that;
“On August 9, at approximately 06:00 a.m. local time off the southern coast of Japan, a 41-year-old female guest (Taiwanese citizen) was discovered missing by shipboard personnel. The ship’s security team began a full ship search immediately. CCTV confirmed the guest, who was alone at the time, climbed over the railing on deck 11 before intentionally going overboard.
Sun Princess reversed course, and a search of the area was initiated. As part of standard rescue procedures, the ship launched a fast rescue craft to enhance the search effort. The guest was recovered and confirmed deceased by the ship’s medical team.
All appropriate authorities were notified. The search was coordinated by the Japanese Coast Guard until Sun Princess was released to proceed on the voyage.
Sun Princess was en route to Okinawa, Japan and arrived as scheduled. The ship was on day two of a four-day cruise that departed Keelung, Taiwan on August 7 and returned on August 11.
