Armed Pirates Kidnap 15 and Kill 1 From Container Ship Off Nigerian Coast

Reporting indicates that 0530UTC on January 23rd, the Liberian flagged container ship M / V MOZART was attacked and successfully boarded by four armed pirates.

The crew is understood to have retreated to the citadel. Initial reporting shows that the citadel was probably breached. 15 crew have been kidnapped, and one killed.

The attack happened some 95NM NW of São Tomé & Principe Island in the Gulf of Guinea as the vessel was heading to Cape Town from Lagos.

The ship is currently being manoeuvred by the remaining 3 crew to Port Gentil, Gabon.

Anadolu Agency a state-run news agency headquartered in Ankara, Turkey reported; “Today, the owners and operators of the M / V MOZART ship, which was abducted at gunpoint in the Gulf of Guinea, have regretfully confirmed that one of its crew members was killed and the others kidnapped,” Istanbul-based Boden company said in a statement.
